DOG-FRIENDLY BUSES – Last but not least, it’s time to bark about buses. Here’s the catch: Public buses throughout Spain will only transport small dogs inside a carrier. For instance, Bizkaibus, which connects Bilbao to other districts of Bizkaia, only allows dogs under 8 kg in a carrier.

Pets on the AVE (including Renfe-SNCF) – Pets are permitted on high-speed AVE trains in Spain, provided they do not disturb other passengers and obtain a ticket. Certified guide dogs may travel on any train for free without a ticket.

The same goes for pavements, so its advisable to take care walking dogs during the really hot heatwaves which sometimes assail Spain. – Any dogs who are listed as potentially dangerous canines must wear an obligatory muzzle appropriate for the breed of the animal. Likewise, these animals must be led by a non-extensible lead or chain of less than 2 metres and one person may not take more than one dog. – Those animals which are in a farm, cottage, villa plot, terrace, patio or any other defined location shall be tied up or restrained unless they are in a suitable enclosed living space to protect people or other animals that are in the vicinity.

The Ordenance below is from Cartagena council but is typical of those everywhere else and lays out the basic rules for dogs in public places: Ordenance regarding dogs in Cartagena – All pets in public places must be properly identified (microchipped)and secured by a lead, chain or collar;

– Potentially dangerous animals in public places or parks must be under proper control and be led by a person who has an appropriate administrative licence for an animal who is registered in the Municipal Register of potentially dangerous animals. – It is strictly prohibited for animals to have access to sandy beaches or public bathing areas, as well as sandy areas in squares or streets.

– People who walk dogs must prevent the depositing of droppings on sidewalks, pathways, gardens or generally any place that is dedicated to pedestrian traffic;
The person in charge of the animal is required to collect and remove droppings in a hygienically acceptable way by using a plastic or paper bag or a dustpan and depositing them in the nearest container;

If there is no designated rubbish container provided, they should be taken to the roadside and deposited at the curb as close to the sewerage system gutters as possible or in an area that is not intended for pedestrians or a designated play area. – Generally, dogs may be loose in enclosed areas that are provided for this purpose by the Ayuntamiento, with the exception of those who present a danger to other users of the facility. – Vaccinated dogs will wear colored vaccination tags on their collars, so be careful when allowing any domestic pet to interact with stray dogs which may not have been vaccinated, particularly if your own dog is in a compound area and has not been vaccinated itself. – When transporting pets, make sure that they are secured in the back of the vehicle and not loose on the seats ( this also applies for cat boxes). – Screens can be purchased to create a physical barrier between the front and back of the car, or special leads purchased to secure dogs in the back of a vehicle.

It is illegal for unsecured animals to travel in a vehicle. – Loose items on back seats are also illegal. – It is well worth purchasing collars to protect against sandflies as these protect leishmaniasis, which is a widespread, fatal illness found in many dogs in Spain, particularly those in the countryside.

Treatment of this illness can prove expensive long term, so a collar is a worthwhile investment and also protects against ticks. There is also a vaccine now available. – Cheap fleacollars offer no protection against leishmaniasis and ticks.

– Lungworm tablets are inexpensive and also a good investment, as are worming tablets. – Beware procession caterpillars in the spring, the hairs can easily kill a dog. Walk dogs well away from areas where these are found and if you see a string of these caterpillars on the floor do not approach them and do not permit your pet to touch them.

Walk on this promenade so your doggy can show off his/her hips, probably some heads will get turned and even a free cuddle will be given! You will be on a semi pedestrian promenade with a lot of water fountains and a tiled floor. Enjoy a colourful walk at the shade of Parque de Elche’s palm trees.

Time 8km/ 2 hours. Must visit: Plaza del Castillo Viewpoint , between Poniente and Levante Beach Perfect for: a long evening walk before or after dinner in a terrace with views to the sea Careful if your dog gets anxious around people since is a very vibrant area all year long.

Walk arround Sierra Helada National Park ( Calas Almadraba y Cala Tio Ximo – Punta de L’Escaleta): If you need to escape from the urban environment without transport, you can access this route with wonderful views from the end of Levante Beach. This route is the Benidorm’s entrance to Sierra Helada Natural Park. Vehicles are not allowed to go through it, so you will be able to walk without worries. But there are bikers usually, and the local legislation determines that your dog must go on a leash.

Perfect for : starting off the day with energy, since it’s when the park is less crowded. Avoid days and hours of intense heat since there are not many areas with shade. There are no water fountains so bring water! 2,5km/45 minutes: from the end of Poniente Beach. Ups and Downs. Asphalted soil. Between Cala Ti Ximo and Cala Almadrava you will find a small parking where you can leave the car if you want to, from that point de route takes 35 minutes to go and 35 minutes to return. Tossal de la Cala, an open-air museum: If you want to complete your outdoor adventures with a bit of history, a visit to this hill, between the Poniente and Finestrat beaches, will delight you. It shows the economic activity that had the area as a center of commercial exchange. It is currently under excavation for the “Musealization of this “castellum” from the first century BC.

Time 25-30 minutes. Compulsory stop: Tossal de la Cala viewpoint (in front the chapel) Perfect for: learning about Benidorm’s Roman origins. Some great chains with low rates AND low pet fees include: Best Western, Comfort Inn & Comfort Suites, Doubletree, Econo Lodge, Embassy Suites, Quality Inn, and Mariott Hotels & Resorts. This is definitely not an exhaustive list and you can certainly find a slew of pet friendly hotels and properties with low rates and pet fees on our site.

Take very special care to abide by the rules of the property you’re staying in and make sure your pet is properly groomed and de-flead before you travel or it may cost you! Some places do not allow pets on the furniture or in the beds. It’s always best to bring their pet bed as well as something to cover the furniture with for good measure.

Law on the admission of dogs in restaurants – There is no specific law on whether or not dogs can enter restaurants, there are many and they conflict with each other. In addition, many of these laws are ambiguous and unclear, but in Doggies in the Town we have read them all to give you a summary so you know in which cities you can be with your dog in restaurants.

European Union regulations state that dogs cannot enter places where food is prepared, handled or stored. Meaning, the entry of dogs is prohibited in kitchens and food stores, since that law does not specify anything about the exclusion of dogs from areas where food is not prepared, handled or stored they can enter the dining room of a restaurant or cafeteria.

In this case, it is up to the food business operator to decide whether there is a risk of dogs entering such areas if they are allowed access to the premises. This is as long as there is no municipal ordinance or regional law that says otherwise: something that happens in Spain, giving rise to surprising disparities, although in the terraces there is some generalization in allowing pets to stay.

Spain’s national regulations, drawn up by the Ministry of Health, are similar to those of Europe and state that dogs cannot enter commercial establishments where food is prepared, sold or stored, as well as shopping centers, markets and food stores.

But this is not the end! There are autonomous communities with laws that do allow dogs to enter restaurants. And in communities such as Andalusia, Madrid and Catalonia, as a general rule dogs are welcome in restaurants, with limitations when it is the owner of the restaurant who must prohibit or expressly allow the entry of dogs.

But there is still more, and that is that before this type of laws, restaurants are subject to local regulations. Thus, deciding the entrance of dogs in restaurants is the final jurisdiction of each municipality.

Although this means that if there is no legislation at the local level, the legislation of the province, autonomous community or state is applied by default. This means that there will be cities where there are more dog friendly restaurants than in others.

If you are coming from a non-EU country, you must enter Spain through one of the designated Travelers’ Points of Entry (January-2022) and declare to the Guardia Civil’s Tax Department that you are traveling with a pet and provide its documentation;

In order to enter Spain, your pet must be at least 12 weeks and 21 days old, will need to have a microchip or other approved type of identification on their bodies, a current rabies vaccine, a health inspection certified by an official veterinarian in your home country (with Spanish translation) and certified copies of the identification and vaccination documents.

You may also be asked for a written declaration in which you will have to specify the purpose of your trip and indicate that your intent is to keep your pet with you and not to sell it. NOTE: If you’re arriving from a country not listed in Section 4 of Annex II of Regulation (EU) 577/2013 , your pet will also have to have undergone a rabies serological test (a blood test) in an authorized laboratory.

You may only enter the country with up to five pets—which is the legal limit for pet ownership in Spain—unless you can prove that the animals are training for or participating in some kind of sporting event. If that is the case, each animal must be at least six months old.

How can I travel with my dog to Spain?

You must carry a valid EU pet passport.
Your dog must have a microchip (or have a clearly legible tattoo from before 3rd July 2011).

The vaccine is valid until the end of the vaccination protection period specified by the manufacturer (1-year shelf life). This is also the case for booster vaccinations, which are considered as an initial vaccination if not carried out within the validity period.
Additionally, entry into Spain must not take place until at least 21 days after completion of the initial vaccination protocol recommended by the manufacturer.
