Can Dogs Go On Trains In Spain?
Pets on the AVE (including Renfe-SNCF) – Pets are permitted on high-speed AVE trains in Spain, provided they do not disturb other passengers and obtain a ticket. Certified guide dogs may travel on any train for free without a ticket.
- Small domestic pets, defined as dogs, cats, ferrets & birds (not poultry) no heavier than 10 kg can be carried in a suitable carrier not exceeding 60cm x 35cm x 35 cm.
- Larger dogs are not permitted on any Spanish trains.
- In sleeping accommodation, the transport of animals is only permitted if you book sole occupancy of couchettes/sleepers compartment.
- Only one pet will be allowed per passenger
- Guide dogs for the blind are permitted to travel free of charge.
- Passengers with Preferente, Club, Gran Clase and Great Comfort tickets may transport pets for free, provided that they take the pet to the ticket office prior to boarding. For all other classes set a price of 25% Economy Class seat is applied.
How to book: Tickets for pets can be booked online on Renfe’s website, at the same time as purchasing passenger tickets. Once you’ve selected the available fare, click the dog icon under the summary table to add a ticket for your pet (one per passenger). The price is €15.
Can dogs go on public transport in Spain?
DOG-FRIENDLY BUSES – Last but not least, it’s time to bark about buses. Here’s the catch: Public buses throughout Spain will only transport small dogs inside a carrier. For instance, Bizkaibus, which connects Bilbao to other districts of Bizkaia, only allows dogs under 8 kg in a carrier.
Unfortunately, except for working dogs (for the blind, disabled, and security personnel), larger dogs are NOT allowed on public buses in Spain. If you are traveling locally with a big dog, you will have to resort to getting a taxi or rideshare unless you have a car or private transfer.
Call ahead of time or look for a dog-friendly option on the app to make sure the driver will accept your dog along with any requirements. I’ve seen big dogs being transported in crates in taxis in Catalonia, but I’m not sure if the demand was made by the driver. 
ARF, so are dogs allowed on public transportation in Spain ? You betcha, but with some limitations for big dogs. How do you travel with pets in Spain?
Entering (or Re-Entering) Spain with Pets: The Basics – If you are entering Spain from another EU country, your pet must be at least 12 weeks and 21 days old, will need to have a microchip or other approved type of identification on their bodies, a current rabies vaccine and a European pet passport.
If you are coming from a non-EU country, you must enter Spain through one of the designated Travelers’ Points of Entry (January-2022) and declare to the Guardia Civil’s Tax Department that you are traveling with a pet and provide its documentation.
In order to enter Spain, your pet must be at least 12 weeks and 21 days old, will need to have a microchip or other approved type of identification on their bodies, a current rabies vaccine, a health inspection certified by an official veterinarian in your home country (with Spanish translation) and certified copies of the identification and vaccination documents.
You may also be asked for a written declaration in which you will have to specify the purpose of your trip and indicate that your intent is to keep your pet with you and not to sell it. NOTE: If you’re arriving from a country not listed in Section 4 of Annex II of Regulation (EU) 577/2013 , your pet will also have to have undergone a rabies serological test (a blood test) in an authorized laboratory.
You may only enter the country with up to five pets—which is the legal limit for pet ownership in Spain—unless you can prove that the animals are training for or participating in some kind of sporting event. If that is the case, each animal must be at least six months old.
Can I take my dog to Spain by car?
Bottom Line Taking dogs to Spain is pretty straightforward. If you are taking a dog, you will need to get them a Spain Pet Passport or an EU Pet Passport. This involves getting your dog microchipped and vaccinated against rabies at the vet. If you are taking a dog to Spain for commercial reasons, you may also need a health certificate, depending on where you are traveling from.

- Flying can often be more complicated because airlines have strict rules and regulations in place for those traveling with dogs;
- If you are planning on flying with dogs to Spain, ensure you select an airline that will permit the transport of your dog, and plan your trip well in advance;

Are dogs allowed on sleeper trains?
Is the Caledonian Sleep dog friendly? – For dog owners like me, you may be thinking that all sounds great but is the Caledonian Sleeper dog friendly? This overnight train service does allow for canine companions to join you onboard. Their website writes: A family getaway can often feel like someone is missing if your furry friend is left behind.
We love welcoming your pets on board, meaning you can bring the whole family along while you travel. You’re allowed to bring up to two pets on the train free of charge. However, pet owners will have to pay a £30 cleaning fee.
They explain that the fee is to cover a deep clean of the room after you and your furry pooch have checked out. There are a couple of other things to consider. You’ll have to book a room as pets aren’t allowed in their Seated Carriage or their Club Lounge.
Can I travel around Europe with my dog?
Make sure your dog is healthy, microchipped, and ready for travel. – To travel internationally with your dog, you’ll need to get an international standard microchip (HomeAgain is a common brand) and make sure your dog is up-to-date on his or her vaccines (especially the rabies shot, of which the most recent shot must be given at least 21 days and no more than 12 months before your trip).
- Many countries, including all those in the European Union, require pet dogs, cats, and ferrets to be microchipped before travel;
- A microchip compatible with ISO standard 11784 or 11785 is recommended;
- If your pet has a different microchip, consider buying a microchip reader and taking it with you;
And note that, if you have to get your dog microchipped, you must do it before you get your dog’s latest rabies vaccine, so at least three weeks before your trip.
Can you take dogs on Eurotunnel?
Eurotunnel is an authorised pet carrier and does not prevent any dog from accessing its service where the animal meets the requirements of the DEFRA Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) and EU entry requirements.
Do dogs need muzzles in Spain?
Responsibilities of the pet parent of a potentially dangerous dog – Pet parents who wish to import a potentially dangerous dog in Spain have to follow all local regulations. Pet owners have to be more than 18 years of age to own a potentially dangerous dog, and they must be physically and psychologically capable of caring for the dog.
- The dogs must be registered with the local council.
- All vaccinations must be up-to-date.
- Your dog must have a license and a microchip.
- The dog must have a third-party liability insurance policy that covers dog attacks.
- The dog must be on a lead and muzzled at all times in a public place. Potentially dangerous dog breeds flying into Spain must be muzzled during the post-entry check.
- If the dog is off the lead at home, the pet parent must make safety arrangements to ensure the dog stays within the perimeter of the residence and cannot escape and wander away.
- If the dog is lost or stolen, it must be immediately communicated to the local authorities.
Do you need a dog Licence in Spain?
Any person owning a potentially dangerous dog (perros potencialmente peligrosos) in Spain must have an appropriate licence (by law of article 3 of the Royal Decree 287/2002, of 22 of March 2002) and the dog must be registered with the municipality.
