Can You Take Dogs On Trains In Spain?
Pets on the AVE (including Renfe-SNCF) – Pets are permitted on high-speed AVE trains in Spain, provided they do not disturb other passengers and obtain a ticket. Certified guide dogs may travel on any train for free without a ticket.
- Small domestic pets, defined as dogs, cats, ferrets & birds (not poultry) no heavier than 10 kg can be carried in a suitable carrier not exceeding 60cm x 35cm x 35 cm.
- Larger dogs are not permitted on any Spanish trains.
- In sleeping accommodation, the transport of animals is only permitted if you book sole occupancy of couchettes/sleepers compartment.
- Only one pet will be allowed per passenger
- Guide dogs for the blind are permitted to travel free of charge.
- Passengers with Preferente, Club, Gran Clase and Great Comfort tickets may transport pets for free, provided that they take the pet to the ticket office prior to boarding. For all other classes set a price of 25% Economy Class seat is applied.
How to book: Tickets for pets can be booked online on Renfe’s website, at the same time as purchasing passenger tickets. Once you’ve selected the available fare, click the dog icon under the summary table to add a ticket for your pet (one per passenger). The price is €15.
Can you travel with a dog on a train?
Bring your small dog or cat along for a small fee. – Dogs and cats up to 20 pounds (combined weight of pet and carrier) are welcome on trips up to seven hours on most routes (some restrictions apply*). Our check-in process is simple, making traveling with your four-legged friend easy and enjoyable.

- There’s a maximum of five pets per train (service animals do not count towards this limit), so we encourage you to make your pet reservations in advance.
- Reservations are limited to one pet per customer.
- Pet fee is assessed for each travel segment.
- Pets are permitted in Coach Class and Acela Business Class (pets are not allowed in Sleeping cars, non-Acela Business Class, food service cars or other accommodations).
- Reservations with pets are limited to seven hours total travel time, including transfer time between trains on multiple-segment trips.
- Pets cannot be booked with multi-ride tickets, Thruway Connection Services or with unaccompanied minors.
- In the event of a service disruption, Amtrak will make reasonable efforts to seek (but cannot guarantee) pet-friendly hotel accommodations, if sheltering is necessary.
- For travel across segments with different prices, the higher price applies.

- Pet owners must provide a pet carrier, which may be hard or soft sided but must be leak proof and well ventilated.
- Maximum weight of pet with carrier is 20 pounds.
- The maximum size for pet carriers is 19″ long x 14″ wide x 10. 5″ high.
- For your pet’s comfort and safety, it must be able to sit, lie down and remain entirely inside without touching the sides of the carrier.
- Your pet carrier counts as one piece of carry-on baggage.

- Pets should remain entirely inside a closed carrier while in stations and onboard trains and must remain with you at all times; do not leave them alone.
- Onboard, place your pet carrier under your seat (not under the seat in front of you), except on Amtrak Cascades trains where you can put your pet carrier on the floor in front of the seat next to you.
- Pets are welcome in Coach class, but remember they may not travel in First class, non-Acela Business class, bedroom accommodations or food service cars.
- Some routes designate a specific Coach car for pets: Amtrak Cascades, Carl Sandburg, Illinois Zephyr, Illini, Lincoln Service, Saluki, Pere Marquette, Wolverine, Blue Water, Hiawatha and Missouri River Runner. On other pet friendly routes, you and your pet may ride in any Coach car.

- To confirm pet eligibility, you should read and sign a Pet Release and Indemnification Agreement for each travel segment.
- At staffed stations, check in at the ticket office no later than 30 minutes before departure to complete the pet release paperwork.
- At unstaffed stations, the conductor will confirm pet eligibility and provide you with the document to sign.

- Your pet must be at least eight weeks old and be odorless, harmless, not disruptive and require no attention during travel.
- Amtrak maintains the right to refuse acceptance, and may remove any pet exhibiting these issues from stations or trains.
- You certify that your pet is up to date on all vaccinations and accept liability for your pet by signing the pet release document at check-in. Amtrak does not accept liability for the health and well-being of pets.
- We do not ship pets or allow them to travel as checked baggage — a pet must travel with a human. Service animals are not considered pets, and are welcome on all Amtrak services.
Can I take my dog on the bus in Spain?
DOG-FRIENDLY BUSES – Last but not least, it’s time to bark about buses. Here’s the catch: Public buses throughout Spain will only transport small dogs inside a carrier. For instance, Bizkaibus, which connects Bilbao to other districts of Bizkaia, only allows dogs under 8 kg in a carrier.
Unfortunately, except for working dogs (for the blind, disabled, and security personnel), larger dogs are NOT allowed on public buses in Spain. If you are traveling locally with a big dog, you will have to resort to getting a taxi or rideshare unless you have a car or private transfer.
Call ahead of time or look for a dog-friendly option on the app to make sure the driver will accept your dog along with any requirements. I’ve seen big dogs being transported in crates in taxis in Catalonia, but I’m not sure if the demand was made by the driver. 
ARF, so are dogs allowed on public transportation in Spain ? You betcha, but with some limitations for big dogs. Are dogs allowed in restaurants in Barcelona?
Barcelona is a beautiful Spanish city known for being a major cultural and economic hub in Europe. The city is home to beautiful medieval architecture, world heritage sights, and numerous parks and beaches. Barcelona is a great city to live with your pet dog; you will find people with their dogs all over the city at all times.
Barcelona is incredibly pet-friendly, and you can bring your pup along when you go shopping, or to a restaurant or café, to the beach and on the public transit system. Pet dogs travelling to Barcelona must fulfil all pet import regulations satisfactorily to enter the country.

Are dogs allowed on the beach in Spain?
Is my dog allowed on the beach is a common question – The question of whether dogs are allowed on Spanish beaches is a common one, but in short, no, they’re not, is the general answer. 
Spain is changing, and more municipalities are attemping to create dog friendly beaches, but in general dogs are not allowed onto beaches. This is quite simply down to money, as beaches are the lifeblood of the tourist trade and councils are obsessed with obtaining quality ratings for their beaches, so making sure visiting tourists are not treading in piles of dog excrement is high on the agenda of every council during the summer months. Although a blind eye is often turned during the winter months, and everyone who has been in Spain for more than a few months will concur, many dog owners do take their dogs onto beaches, but this is breaking the law right throughout the year and should a council be on a clamp-down, or a passing police officer decide to enforce the law, then it is a fineable offence. The path to creating dog friendly beaches is a rocky one, as although some residents will call for a beach on which they can exercise dogs, there will always be other residents who oppose it and complain about dog excrement and noise. Sometimes a beach is declared dog friendly and then within months this has changed, so the best advice is to call your local tourist office and ask.
- If you do have a dog beach, make sure your pet is vaccinated and chipped, and take the pet passport given by your vet as proof of this with you: it may not be needed, but its always best to be covered in Spain;
If you are lucky enough to have a dog beach in your municipality, take care during very hot weather as dogs with burnt pads are a common sight when temperatures are at peak levels. The same goes for pavements, so its advisable to take care walking dogs during the really hot heatwaves which sometimes assail Spain. – Any dogs who are listed as potentially dangerous canines must wear an obligatory muzzle appropriate for the breed of the animal. Likewise, these animals must be led by a non-extensible lead or chain of less than 2 metres and one person may not take more than one dog. – Those animals which are in a farm, cottage, villa plot, terrace, patio or any other defined location shall be tied up or restrained unless they are in a suitable enclosed living space to protect people or other animals that are in the vicinity.
There are other rules regarding dog behaviour in public, the most important relating to muzzles, vaccinations, excrement and leads. The Ordenance below is from Cartagena council but is typical of those everywhere else and lays out the basic rules for dogs in public places: Ordenance regarding dogs in Cartagena – All pets in public places must be properly identified (microchipped)and secured by a lead, chain or collar.
– Potentially dangerous animals in public places or parks must be under proper control and be led by a person who has an appropriate administrative licence for an animal who is registered in the Municipal Register of potentially dangerous animals. – It is strictly prohibited for animals to have access to sandy beaches or public bathing areas, as well as sandy areas in squares or streets.
- – People who walk dogs must prevent the depositing of droppings on sidewalks, pathways, gardens or generally any place that is dedicated to pedestrian traffic;
- The person in charge of the animal is required to collect and remove droppings in a hygienically acceptable way by using a plastic or paper bag or a dustpan and depositing them in the nearest container;
If there is no designated rubbish container provided, they should be taken to the roadside and deposited at the curb as close to the sewerage system gutters as possible or in an area that is not intended for pedestrians or a designated play area. – Generally, dogs may be loose in enclosed areas that are provided for this purpose by the Ayuntamiento, with the exception of those who present a danger to other users of the facility. – Vaccinated dogs will wear colored vaccination tags on their collars, so be careful when allowing any domestic pet to interact with stray dogs which may not have been vaccinated, particularly if your own dog is in a compound area and has not been vaccinated itself. – When transporting pets, make sure that they are secured in the back of the vehicle and not loose on the seats ( this also applies for cat boxes). – Screens can be purchased to create a physical barrier between the front and back of the car, or special leads purchased to secure dogs in the back of a vehicle.
- In public parks where there are no enclosed areas, dogs must be on a lead;
- Additional useful dog information for newcomers to Spain;
- – By law, all dogs must be microchipped and vaccinated;
- Both of these processes can be carried out by local vets;
It is illegal for unsecured animals to travel in a vehicle. – Loose items on back seats are also illegal. – It is well worth purchasing collars to protect against sandflies as these protect leishmaniasis, which is a widespread, fatal illness found in many dogs in Spain, particularly those in the countryside.
Treatment of this illness can prove expensive long term, so a collar is a worthwhile investment and also protects against ticks. There is also a vaccine now available. – Cheap fleacollars offer no protection against leishmaniasis and ticks.
– Lungworm tablets are inexpensive and also a good investment, as are worming tablets. – Beware procession caterpillars in the spring, the hairs can easily kill a dog. Walk dogs well away from areas where these are found and if you see a string of these caterpillars on the floor do not approach them and do not permit your pet to touch them.
What is the best way to travel with a dog?
If you plan to bring your pet on vacation, driving is usually a better option. If you can’t travel by car, your pet will probably be healthier and happier if you leave them behind under the care of a pet-sitter or boarding kennel.
