I went through and then went to the kiosk and got my passport stamped. My husband was held up at the digital scanner and eventually came through. By that time I had moved away from the kiosk that stamps passports. Unfortunately my husband didn’t realise that u had to get your passport stamped and he walked straight out. Will there be a problem not having it stamped? If we need to amend things please can somebody let us know as we don’t want any problems on our return to Uk or any subsequent visits to Spain.

It’s the non-residents who, in the event that their passports aren’t stamped, are going to have to make sure they keep their boarding passes;

Until Spanish immigration get its act together, I think you’re right, people are going to have to go back to printing their boarding passes. Madness! Spain’s Interior Ministry has eased passport control rules and UK citizens will now be able to use the EU e-gates at some airports. UK holidaymakers can now use automated border control e-gates to scan their passports in selected Spanish airports like citizens of EU and Schengen nations.

The measure is being brought in to ease the strain on airports ahead of peak holiday season, The Local reports;
The airports implementing the new passport rules include Alicante, Barcelona, Bilbao, Girona, Gran Canaria, Ibiza, Lanzarote, Madrid, Málaga, Mallorca, Menorca, Valencia, Fuerteventura, Sevilla, and Tenerife Sur;

There will also be an additional 500 border officials across the airports. Spain has already seen 6. 5 million UK tourists visit this year and expects to see a yearly total close to that of 2019 – 83. 7m UK tourists, reports ChronicleLive. Brits are warned that they will still be required to have their passport stamped at the border at some Spanish airports and there may be separate queues for UK citizens to get their passports stamped at a manned booth.

Since Brexit came into effect in January of last year British tourists have had to join the non-EU passport queue to have their passports checked by a police officer and stamped. Earlier this month Spain’s Iberia airline estimated that 15,000 travellers had missed a flight connection since March 1 due to passport control delays at the Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport, Irish Mirror reports.

UK citizens are required to have their passport stamped on entering and leaving Schengen countries, such as Spain, without a visa. This is to show that their stay hasn’t exceeded their 90-day visa-free limit, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advice states.

The FCDO’s latest advice on travelling to Spain states: “Check your passport is stamped if you enter or exit the Schengen area through Spain as a visitor. Border guards will use passport stamps to check you’re complying with the 90-day visa-free limit for short stays in the Schengen area.

If relevant entry or exit stamps are not in your passport, border guards will presume that you have overstayed your visa-free limit. “You can show evidence of when and where you entered or exited the Schengen area, and ask the border guards to add this date and location in your passport.

Examples of acceptable evidence include boarding passes and tickets;
” Brits entering Spain will also need to show their fully vaccinated Covid-19 status, a negative Covid-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours prior to departure, or an antigen test taken within 24 hours of departure;

Alternatively, they can show a medical certificate or recovery record to prove they’ve recovered from Covid in the past six-months. Portugal has also made the decision to allow UK citizens to use their e-gates. The country brought in the measure in April.

European Union countries have approved extending the use of Covid-19 certificates by one year until the end of June 2023 as cases of the deadly virus start to grow again ahead of the summer holiday season;

Aimed at facilitating travel across the 27-nation bloc during the pandemic, the certificates came into force in July last year and have been a successful tool to help EU citizens move in the region in coronavirus times without restrictions such as quarantines.

EU countries have issued nearly two billion certificates. The document attests that a person has been vaccinated against coronavirus or that they have a recent negative test result or have recovered from the infection.

The European Council said the regulation can be lifted earlier. But after most EU countries removed coronavirus restrictions over the past months in light of the improved health situation, a recent increase in infections fuelled by new variants is leading governments to rethink their strategies.

If you really desire a stamp, you can request one or visit the tourism office for the symbol. Disappearing stamps aren’t the only changes to passport customs. Some airports have tried out facial scanning in place of the booklets. Other countries have decided to turn to machine-readable passports and RFID chip technology in hopes of reducing lines and increasing passenger travel efficiency.

Biometric technology could quickly take over foreign travel procedures. The technology has already improved immigration efficiency around the globe, but also helps with security. Passports are much more difficult to forge with these updates.

The RFID chip technology and self-service kiosks at airports reduce passengers’ line time. According to Passport Info , “it takes less than two minutes to use the kiosk, and travelers who live together can be processed at the same time. ” The new process isn’t perfect yet, but long, difficult immigration lines could become a thing of the past.

After helping to improve passenger efficiency, more airports have decided to install extra kiosks. Miami International Airport added an additional 44 passport control kiosks in 2015 alone. As passport stamps become scarce, travelers should expect to see a lot more self-service kiosks in the future.

com reports. Under the new rules, citizens of the United Kingdom will now be permitted to use the EU e-gates at some airports in Spain that have seen mass delays due to staff shortages. The Spanish airports that will implement the new passport rules for UK citizens include Alicante, Barcelona, Bilbao, Girona, Gran Canaria, Ibiza, Madrid, Lanzarote, Malaga, Menorca, Mallorca, Valencia, Sevilla, Fuerteventura, and Tenerife Sur.

UK passengers arriving at any of the airports mentioned above can use the automated border control to scan their passports, meaning that they will no longer have to wait at the non-EU passport queues. In addition, the Spanish authorities have explained that there will also be an additional 500 border officials deployed in these airports.

While the above-mentioned airports will allow automated passport controls, the authorities have warned that UK citizens will still be required to have their passports stamped at some other airports. Since last year, when Brexit entered into force, citizens of the UK have been required to have their passport stamped when entering as well as leaving Schengen Area countries, including Spain.

By having their passport stamped, UK citizens are able to prove that they have not exceeded their 90-day visa-free limit. Considering the current visa-free limit that UK citizens have when entering Schengen countries, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has advised that everyone checks if their passport is stamped when entering or exiting the Schengen Area through Spain as a visitor.

I need a stamp as my per diem payment is based on the date if arrival -and the stamp is the best proof that my carriers accounting department accepts during audit, The only time I’ve seen a request turned down is *if* the request is made *after* you’ve finished and cleared the inspection and/or inspection area.

By that I mean, and as example, I’ve seen people forget and ask for a stamp in Honolulu and San Francisco, and ask a CBP* officer in the baggage reclaim area** (*Note: prior to the creation of the CBP, immigration and customs were seperate functions and administered by seperate agents and agencies, therefore asking customs for an immigration stamp, usually wasn’t possible.

@eis Yes, most countries stamp foreigners in and out. The main exceptions are the UK, the US, Ireland, Canada, Mexico (some exits), and Australia (some travellers). In Europe, non-EEA citizens will be stamped in and out when they enter or leave the Schengen zone. I think this still leaves 100+ countries which stamp people in and out systematically. It has been said already that when leaving by air, the US does not stamp passports. When you check in, the airline takes the stub of the form you filled out when entering the US, and which usually gets stapled to the page of the passport where the entry stamp was placed. @MaxWyss Having the boarding pass might help CBP to correct the records if there was an inconsistency (since it’ll include the flight information), but just having the flight information would serve as well. Spain changed the passport rules for British holidaymakers just recently , allowing them to use the country’s e-gates despite not being EU nationals. However, the Foreign Office of the United Kingdom has emphasised that its nationals may need three additional documents to be able to get through Spain’s e-gates.

Updating its travel advice for UK passengers reaching Spain, the Foreign Office said that at the Spanish border control, they might need to show a return or onward ticket, prove that they have enough money for their stay, and show proof of accommodation, SchengenVisaInfo;

com reports. The Foreign Office explained that British holidaymakers could either show a hotel booking confirmation, proof of address if visiting their own property, or an invitation from a host or proof of their address if staying with a third party, friends, or family.

“The Spanish government has clarified that the “carta de invitation” is one of the options available to prove that you have accommodation if staying with friends or family,” the Foreign Office highlighted.

Apart from the above-mentioned, the Foreign Office has advised that everyone check if their passport is stamped when entering or exiting the Schengen Area through Spain as a visitor. “Border guards will use passport stamps to check you’re complying with the 90-day visa-free limit for short stays in the Schengen area.

If relevant entry or exit stamps are not in your passport, border guards will presume that you have overstayed your visa-free limit,” the Foreign Office explains;
Britons can show evidence of when and where they entered or exited the Schengen Area;

In addition, they can ask the border guards to add the date and location to their passport. The passport stamping rule applies only to tourists. Britons who are Spanish residents do not need to have their passports stamped. Even though Britons can now pass more easily through Spain’s airports, they still need to follow COVID entry rules.

All travellers from the UK over the age of 12 must present a valid vaccination, recovery, or test certificate when entering Spain. Previously, the UK issued a travel warning for Britons visiting Spain. The UK authorities announced they changed the travel advice for their citizens planning to travel to Spain and informed everyone that the planned strike action in July might cause some disruption to easyJet and Ryanair flights from Spain.

Moreover, people concerned that their travel plans may be affected by these disruptions have been advised to consult their airline for the latest travel update.

@eis Yes, most countries stamp foreigners in and out. The main exceptions are the UK, the US, Ireland, Canada, Mexico (some exits), and Australia (some travellers). In Europe, non-EEA citizens will be stamped in and out when they enter or leave the Schengen zone. I think this still leaves 100+ countries which stamp people in and out systematically. @eis: If you are an EU citizen, of course you do not get stamped on entry on exit (so I can’t really say whether or not you get stamped on exit when you are not an EU citizen). In my passport, the USA and Mexico do not have exit stamps (but they do have entry stamps). Oct 14, 2018 at 23:47

@MaxWyss Having the boarding pass might help CBP to correct the records if there was an inconsistency (since it’ll include the flight information), but just having the flight information would serve as well.
