PETS STAYING IN VEHICLE Pets are not allowed in cabins, the pet exercise area or any other public areas of the ship (except registered assistance dogs). Your pet must remain in your vehicle. Where do dogs stay on ferries?

General Rules for Travelling with Pets on Ferries – Most ferries’ pet policies focus almost entirely on dogs, as these are the most frequently-transported animals. A tiny minority of ferries readily accept cats and even ferrets, but most provide no information on the subject.

To transport anything other than a dog we would therefore advise you do further research. Ferries typically offer two options for taking your dog abroad. Firstly, they may be locked in your car on the cargo hold during your journey.

Alternatively, they may be placed into the on-board kennels. Not all ferries offer both services, and there is typically a charge for either option. Foot passengers can struggle, as many ferry operators will expect you to contain your dog in a suitable (RSPCA-approved) pet carrier during the journey.

For owners of large-breed dogs this may be a considerable inconvenience. Broadly speaking dogs must be kept locked away at all times, and are not permitted in passenger areas. A few ferry companies are bucking this trend, and offer designated areas to walk your dog, or even a pet-friendly lounge.

In these circumstances dogs are generally expected to be leashed and muzzled to avoid the risk of accidents. All dogs, cats and ferrets are expected to be covered by the PETs scheme. You should do your own research to ensure that your pet will be approved for travel, as any pets not meeting the necessary requirements generally aren’t allowed to board.

Are dogs allowed on Santander ferry?

Coping with the trip – Just to get one important point out of the way – you must ensure that you specify your intent to travel with a pet when making your booking. If your travel service provider or chosen accommodation isn’t pet-friendly, you could be turned away or refused travel. When taking the ferry to Spain, pets cannot be left in vehicles given the duration of the crossing. As such, it’s necessary to book a cabin that can accommodate you and your pet. Alternatively, there’s also the option of using the on-board kennel services available on many crossings to Spain. Taking plenty of toys and distractions along for the ride is a good idea – especially for dogs that have a tendency to become somewhat restless.

  • In the case of nervous pets, it’s worth discussing safe herbal supplements with your vet, which could help calm and ease them during the journey;
  • In fact, it’s worth discussing your plans with your vet prior to departure anyway, in order to pick up a few tips and tricks for making the journey as smooth as possible;

If you have any doubts as to the eligibility of your pet to travel with you or how to make the necessary arrangements, get in touch with your service provider. Are dogs allowed on DFDS ferries?

Foot passengers can only bring pets if they book a pet friendly cabin. There are kennels onboard the ship. These are for dogs only and are bookable via the contact centre. It is also possible to keep your pet in the vehicle during the crossing, but it must be properly secured inside the vehicle.

What are the kennels like on Stena Line?

The Stena kennels are less pleasant. They are on the car deck, not in a separate room and are chilly as they are close to a huge fan (air con?). The only plus point here is that some of them are covered by a pet cam which you can see from the passenger area.

Do you need a pet passport for ferry?

Pet Passport & Government regulations  – EU pet passport rules apply throughout the European Union. All Dogs, Cats and Ferrets travelling between member states need an official recognised EU Pet Passport with veterinary endorsements certifying compliance with tests, treatments and vaccinations. Brexit: For travel to GB, an EU pet passport issued in a member state is still valid for entry. For travel to the EU and Northern Ireland, from 1 January 2021 onwards, people travelling with their pets and assistance dogs will need to follow new requirements. Importantly, a current EU pet passport issued in Britain will not be valid for travel to the EU or NI, but an animal health certificate (AHC) will be required.

  • The endorsements must be dated (including expiry dates), stamped and signed by an authorised Vet;
  • It is your responsibility to ensure that all of the entry conditions are met;
  • Allow at least 1 month to arrange this and relevant vaccinations;

EU pet passports issued by Northern Ireland will remain valid for EU travel. Before taking their dog, cat or ferret to the EU for the first time after 1 January 2021, pet owners must complete the following steps:

  • Ensure their dog, cat or ferret is microchipped.
  • Have a valid EU pet passport OR an animal health certificate issued by a UK official vet. A health certificate is required before each entry into the EU. (Pet owners are advised to retain any GB-issued EU pet passport, as it may contain important information about vaccinations, treatments, etc. )
  • Ensure that their dog, cat or ferret is vaccinated against rabies – pets must be at least 12 weeks old before they can be vaccinated. Wait 21 days after the primary vaccination before travel.
  • Have a tapeworm treatment (for dogs). Dogs travelling from, or returning from, Britain to Ireland will require treatment against tapeworm by a veterinarian 24 to 120 hours (1 to 5 days) before arrival in Ireland. If travelling with a passport issued in Ireland, this treatment may be entered into the pet passport by a UK vet.

Pets and assistance dogs will also need to enter the EU through a travellers’ point of entry (TPE). Cars travelling with pets arriving into Dublin port should stay in Lane 4 (lane on the right) for the necessary pet clearance. Check the relevant authority’s websites for full details of the requirements: Ireland: https://www. gov. ie/en/publication/b76e9-brexit-movement-of-pets/ UK: https://www. uk/guidance/pet-travel-to-and-from-great-britain Government regulations for pets – Ireland /Britain/Ireland routes only
