If ministers decide to add both countries later this week, travellers will be forced to quarantine in a hotel upon arrival for at least 11 nights. It comes after analysis by the World Health Organisation found the highly-infectious South African and Brazilian variants in dozens of countries not on the Government’s high-risk list.

They included Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Greece, Japan, Kenya, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the US. Travellers from the US and Spain are currently allowed to quarantine at home without having to pay £1,750 to stay in one of the Government’s 16 approved hotels.

But this could all change following local transmission of the new variants in both countries, and their location beside South America and Portugal, which are under UK travel bans. Will Spain turn red in the next update? – The 14-day case rate has fallen which is looking good for the country. The country’s average Covid rate currently stands at 604 infections per 100,000 people – down from 721 the previous week and 784 the week prior, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.

However, more than one in 35 travellers arriving in Britain from Spain in the week to August 4 were found to have the virus, according to NHS Test and Trace figures published last week. Despite a recent fall in cases, Spain’s infection rate is still the second-highest in Europe behind Cyprus, whose 14-day case rate stands at 931 per 100,000.

Both countries are on the amber list for travel, meaning double-jabbed Britons no longer need to quarantine upon return, though they still have to take a series of costly Covid tests. In comparison, the UK’s infection rate is 295 – almost 50 per cent lower than Spain’s.
