Is the England game on ITV?

Channel 4 has swooped to secure England’s European qualifiers, friendlies and Nations League matches in its bold bet on live sport as it battles privatisation. As forecasted by Telegraph Sport last week, the currently state-owned broadcaster has successfully beaten current rights-holder ITV to seal a deal with the Football Association and European governing body Uefa between 2022 and 2024.

  • Channel 4 had emerged as a surprise bidder for the matches and had tabled an offer that had forced ITV to pull out of the auction process;
  • Channel 4 confirmed on its social media channels that it had now secured 20 live England matches;

“England’s matches in the Uefa Nations League, European qualifiers to Uefa Euro 2024 and international friendlies will be shown live on Channel 4,” a statement said. “In total Channel 4 will broadcast 20 live England  matches between 2022 to 2024. ”  At the last auction in 2017, ITV had won the rights to show live coverage of England’s qualifiers to Euro 2020, the 2022 World Cup and friendlies.

Sky, meanwhile, had secured England matches over a four-year period for the Uefa Nations League. It is the latest foray into live sport for Channel 4 after more than nine million people tuned in to watch Emma Raducanu US Open victory following a deal it struck with Amazon to secure the free-to-air rights.

Traditional broadcasters are increasingly leaning on set-piece sporting events to bolster their advertising revenues because they have the power to prise viewers away from the American streamers. However, the investment could put Channel 4 in line for criticism when its purpose is to fund edgy innovative shows the BBC would not make.

Channel 4 confirmed six England games will be shown live this year, beginning with the match against Hungary on June 4, followed three days later with the fixture away to Germany on June 7 and then Italy at Molineux on June 11.

“This will be the first time that live coverage of the men’s national team will have featured on Channel 4,” the broadcaster said. Channel 4’s chief content officer Ian Katz said: “After bringing some of the biggest sporting moments of last year to the nation, I’m delighted that Channel 4 will be airing so many mouth-watering England matches on free to air television.

  1. “This deal shows Channel 4 can compete for some of the biggest properties in sport and will bring substantial new audiences to our award-winning slate of original programming;
  2. ” Other recent live sports coverage on Channel 4 has included the British & Irish Lions; England’s Test tour of India; Ireland rugby union internationals; and the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games which attracted 20 million viewers;

Channel 4’s Head of Sport Pete Andrews said: “England matches against Germany are always an exciting prospect and I’m sure the team will be keen to set the record straight against Italy after the defeat in the final of the Uefa Euro. We’re absolutely delighted to have secured this deal with Uefa and I’m sure England fans will be looking forward to the summer with great anticipation.

  1. ” England’s World Cup matches will be shown by other free to air broadcasters;
  2. Telegraph Sport understands an independent firm is being commissioned by Channel 4 to lead on production, with presenters and pundits yet to be decided on;

Moving all England matches to free-to-air is in contrast with the fate awaiting other home nations, which have previously announced deals with new Nordic streaming service Viaplay. Viaplay will exclusively stream Scotland’s, Wales’ and Northern Ireland’s European Qualifiers to the World Cup 2026, Euro 2028, Nations League 2024/25 and 2026/27 and international friendlies.
