Burgos ( Spanish: [ˈbuɾɣos] ) is a city of Spain located in the autonomous community of Castile and León. It is the capital and most populated municipality of the province of Burgos. It is situated in the north of the Iberian Peninsula , on the confluence of the Arlanzón river tributaries, at the edge of the central plateau. The municipality has a population of about 180,000 inhabitants.

It forms part of the Camino de Santiago. Founded in 884 by Diego Rodríguez Porcelos , Burgos soon became the leading city of the embryonic County of Castile. 11th century chieftain Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar ( El Cid ) is connected to the city, as he was born near Burgos and was raised and educated there.

In a long-lasting decline since the 17th century, following the start of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, Burgos became the headquarters of the Francoist proto-government. Declared in 1964 as Pole of Industrial Promotion and in 1969 as Pole of Industrial Development, the city has grown since then in terms of economic activity.

At the regional level, Burgos forms part of an economic axis together with the cities of Valladolid and Palencia. In 2008, the international Burgos Airport started to offer commercial flights. The Museum of Human Evolution opened here in 2010.

The museum features remains of the first hominins in Europe , which lived in this area 750,000-800,000 years ago. The Cathedral of Burgos is a World Heritage Site. Burgos was selected as the “Spanish Gastronomy Capital” of 2013. In 2015 it was named “City of Gastronomy” by UNESCO and has been part of the Creative Cities Network since then.

The town of Burgos is a very friendly overall, but petty crime has been on the rise across Spain, and typically tourists are at the greatest risk.

The most common types of crimes are pickpockets at train stations, on buses and even at the airports. Women can typically feel safe while visiting, even if they are alone but all visitors should use caution when heading out at night.

Purse snatching, or the snatching of other bags is generally the biggest threat to tourists. Because of this don’t make yourself a target. Don’t flash large sums of money; don’t carry valuables in large bags and make sure that your bags are zipped up and sealed at all times.

Would you recommend it? – Burgos, the historic capital of Castile , is a fantastic city in my opinion, above all from an architectural, culinary and landscape point of view. It’s located directly on St James’s Trail and is one of the cities with the highest amount of green areas in all of Spain.

The city is an elegant one, situated on the Arlanzón river. It is steeped in history and has an unending list of monuments which are must-see sights, such as the Gothic Cathedral, Saint Mary’s Archway, Saint John’s Monastery, the Cardinal López of Mendoza Institute, the Paseo de la Isla and Burgos’ old city wall.

The recent discoveries of more prehistoric archaeological sites in Atapuerca have transformed Burgos into a city of worldwide interest. I would describe Burgos as a comfortable place to live. It’s a city that has everything, rather large in size with 180, 000 inhabitants, but it’s no seething metropolis like Madrid.

Of course, this all depends on what your personal preferences are, but if you like peace and quiet sometimes, you’ll definitely find it here;
A walk along the Paseo de la Isla is very calming, and if you want a good dose of entertainment, go out for tapas late on a Friday night or go to one of the many concerts organised by El Hangar (another little jewel of Burgos, a practically brand new music centre where hundreds of musicians perform every week, which enjoys the latest technology and a main space where artists from all over the world can display their work) and you’ll see what I mean;

If you’re one of those people who hate having to take three metros and spending two hours getting to work, you’ll enjoy living in a place with amazing things to discover, and if you’re a foodie, you’ve definitely found the right place.

The Treviño Enclave ( Basque : Trebiñuko Barrendegia Spanish : Enclave de Treviño ) in northern Spain is part of the territory of the province of Burgos (part of Castile and León ), but is completely surrounded by the territory of the Basque Country province of Álava. Thus, it is an enclave of the Basque Country and an exclave of Castile and León. It is formed by a great Cloister from the XIV century that shares space with a total of fifteen chapels from different periods of time. In the inside of the building, there are some marvellous sculptures and paintings adding a richer artistic value to the cathedral.

GET IN

By Air: Burgos is served by the Burgos-Villafria Airport which has daily flights to and from Barcelona. It is easy to take a taxi or bus from there to your place of stay. You also have the option of landing at Bilbao, Madrid, Valladolid or Santander. From these cities, Burgos is easily reached by train.
By Train: All trains arrive at the Burgos Rosa de Lima train station from cities like Bilbao, Barcelona, Madrid, Vigo and Hendaya which are all high-speed connections. The station lies 5 km away from the city but has arrangements for buses and taxis.
By Bus: One of the most convenient, and often, fastest way to get to Burgos. There are multiple buses running daily to several northern cities including Madrid. The bus station is located at the centre of the city.
By Car: Burgos is located 240 km away from Madrid and is easily reached via Hwy A1. From Santandar, you can take Rte N 623 and 627 or Hwy A231 and A67.

By Bicycle: Burgos has cycle lanes spread out across the town which makes bicycles one of the easiest and most convenient modes of transport. You will be able to see most of the sights by simply riding along the river.
By Bus: Burgos has a very extensive bus system and the tickets are very cheap. You can simply buy a ticket when you board a bus.
By Taxis: You can also travel around Burgos on taxis which are white in colour and have a red stripe on the front door. You can hail one from a taxi stand or call in advance to book one.
