Javea (also known as Xàbia) is a gem of a town situated on the Northern Costa Blanca. It’s rugged coastline is indented with secluded coves and sandy beaches. These hidden caves and bays were once used by pirates and smugglers in the Middle Ages but are now used by sunbathers, snorklers and scuba divers.

How far is Javea old town to the port?
What is the town of Jávea like, and is it a busy town? – Jávea is a seaside resort on the Mediterranean coast. In reality, Javea is divided into three main areas: The old town (about 3 km inland from the port), the port, and Arenal (in the centre of Javea bay).
The old town is where you will encounter history, tradition and beautiful Spanish architecture. It is also known as a market town due to the many local markets selling fresh seafood and produce. The town exudes a peaceful atmosphere and old-village charm while providing modern amenities and facilities.
The Arenal boasts the best beach in the area and also plenty of cafes and restaurants. Here is where most people head for the nightlife, and in Summer the area is a throng of nighttime revellers of all age groups. The atmosphere on the main promenade is fun, exciting and remarkably tranquil at the same time, with many families taking their small children for a stroll even at 12 in the evening.
The port also enjoys some lively entertainment (perhaps a little less than the Arenal) and offers a variety of restaurants, cafes and watering holes, many with gorgeous views across the bay towards the Arenal.
The port is also the venue for many of the area’s festivities including the Moors and Christians. Nature is abundant throughout the area of Jávea making it an ideal place to relax and rest away from the bustling crowds, noise, and pollution of the larger, busier coastal towns.

Winter temperatures in Javea – The weather in Javea in winter is very mild compared to northern Europe. Most winter days in Javea are clear and sunny with a little rainfall. The temperatures are unpredictable and can vary greatly in winter. One day it can be over 20 degrees Celsius and you want to wander around in a t-shirt, another day it can be 6 degrees Celsius and you feel very cold.

The clean, warm, blue Mediterranean Sea laps the beautiful beaches and coves that Javea has to offer. With its variety of landscape, ranging from sandy coastlines to rugged mountain areas, its mild year-round climate, its careful planning policies and extensive tourist facilities, Javea is a jewel on the Costa Blanca, combining beauty and modern facilities with the charm of an ancient fishing village.
The town is situated between the San Antonio and La Nao points and enjoys the impressive and magnificent protection of Mount Montgó. Approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes drive from Alicante towards the north-eastern tip of the Costa Blanca.
History & Culture Javea old town is steeped in history and it’s evident in the architecture, with its Tosca stone porticoes, gothic bay windows, wrought iron window bars and balcony railings. The church of San Bartolemé in the town centre is an example of late gothic architecture with a defensive character.
?The “Soler Blasco” Archaeological Museum is close by in the narrow streets and offers a wealth of information about Iberian history. Dominating the fishing port is the modern silhouette of the church of Nuestra Señora de Loreto, with its roof depicting a ships hull.
Outside the town, following the road to the San Antonio cape, the architectural sites include the monastery of Nuestra Señora de los Angeles, a series of small hermitages clutch the slopes of the mountain and ancient windmills dominate the landscape. ? Market In the centre of town the covered indoor market sells all sorts of fabulous fresh local produce: fruit, vegetables, meat and fresh fish are brought up from the port daily.
Port & Marinas? The importance of the town’s maritime activities is apparent in the port area; known as Aduanas de Mar, it boasts a lovely promenade and some excellent fish restaurants where you can enjoy the ‘catch of the day’.
The fishing harbour is situated next to a attractive marina full of interesting yachts, a lovely area for a morning or evening stroll. Eating out Pavement cafés and bars overlooking the Mediterranean invite you to sit and have a drink and just enjoy the ambience of the port.

Shopping Javea is a great place to shop with an excellent choice of shops and boutiques. Sports Javea has an excellent choice of sea sport and fishing facilities. The modern yacht club at the sports marina has nearly 300 berths and offers all types of water sports: sailing, fishing, scuba diving, water skiing, and windsurfing.
There are a number of sports clubs and associations in the area where you can enjoy a game of tennis, horse-riding ?and even shooting. Golf Just outside the town, surrounded by pines and orange groves, the Javea Golf Club offers a pleasant setting for golfers.
There are several other golf courses within easy access of Javea. ?? Fiestas The Javea town fiesta is held during the second fortnight of July and is an occasion for feasting, dancing, parades, music and fireworks, as are the Moors & Christians parades at the end of August.

- Cuisine The local cuisine of Javea is typically that of the Costa Blanca, which combines delicacies from both land and the Mediterranean Sea;
Many civilizations have lived in this area (Celts, Iberians, Greeks, Romans, Muslims), all of which have all left their mark on the gastronomy. The diet in Denia is a healthy Mediterranean one; the Costa Blanca is rich in fish, vegetables, olive-oil, rice and fruit and the ingredients which are all used to prepare delicious, healthy dishes, such as Paella Valenciana, Arroz Negro (black rice), Arroz al horno (Oven baked rice), Arroz a banda (fish and rice stew), Arroz del Señoret (Princes rice).
Aside from seafood, typical dishes include succulent lamb chops, rabbit in garlic, roast leg of lamb with garlic and fresh rosemary, and home made sausages and black puddings. If you have a sweet tooth then you will enjoy the local homemade pastries and deserts that the whole region is famous for.
Or Jijona ice-cream (Nougat), which is made with the almonds of the region. Whilst in Javea we recommend you try the local wine selection on offer, especially Jalon wine a which is of high quality with a lovely bouquet. There are many international restaurants in the town offering a wide choice of different cuisines from around the world.
Climate Javea enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate, with cool sea breezes in summer and protection by surrounding mountains against the cold North winds in winter. The area averages nearly 3,000 hours of sunshine each year and the average temperature easily exceeds 20 degrees.
In 1986 the World Health Organisation recommended the climate of the area as one of the most equitable in the world – neither too hot in the summer nor too cold in the winter. On average it can boast 325 sunny days each year making it an ideal all year round destination.
Which is nicer Denia or Javea?
I think you will end up with some different opinions as to Javea or Denia based on the information supplied; Both have bars, restaurants and an old town quarter to explore. Both have nice beaches; If you prefer looking over the beach/seafront whilst enjoying your meal then Javea restaurants have the advantage here.
Denia has a railway terminus; Javea does not; the closest railway station to Javea would be Gatos de Gorgos (about 5 miles from the central areas of Javea) so Denia has the advantage of convenience for rail travel if this is high on your agenda.
Denia is also a ferry port with the Balearics just over 2 hours away on the fast ferry so an away day is easier from Denia. There are coastal “taxi” boats operating from both Denia to Javea and other local ports – no advantage as to where you stay for visiting another coastal location.
- Javea has a cinema showing English films – go back in time as you buy your ticket that is taken off a roll by hand, torn in half by the usherette, you buy your popcorn and icecream in tubs and sit on seats that were common in the 50’s and 60’s;
Javea is more cosmopolitan than Denia (Denia “feels” more Spanish), and I think Denia is better for shops (if that’s what you like). Where to stay? Will depend on what you want; hotels? are in both Denia and Javea. For a quieter location in Denia then I would suggest NOT staying on Les Marines; but it may not be so noisy at the time you propose to go.

- Without transport then I guess you would want to be quite central so if something smaller than a hotel then take a look at Hostal Loreto in Denia’s old quarter;

Coming to live in Jávea is one of the best decisions anyone could make – but, of course, we could be a little biased. The latest available statistics (2020) show that over 48% of its population of 28,016 are foreigners and that more than 4,400 of those registered residents have come from the UK.
